The Barracks at Housesteads (shown in the GoogleEarth image, above) were found to the eastern and western parts of the fort but three of them, No's. XIII, XIV and XV have been excavated. They were probably half-timbered structures made of wattle-and-daub on foundations of rubble and clay. A verandah ran down the front of each building, supported on timer or stone piers, with a gutter marking where the eaves overhung. The buildings were arranged in pairs facing each other so that they could share the intervening space. The evidence suggests that Buildings IV and XV, although they resemble barracks, were used as a smithy and storehouse (perhaps an armoury) respectively.
